Advancing Education:
Government Institutions Commit to Providing Study Material in Indian Languages Digitally
In a significant move towards promoting linguistic diversity in education, government educational institutions in India have pledged to make study material available in Indian languages digitally within the next three years. This directive, issued by the Ministry of Education, encompasses schools, higher education regulators such as UGC, AICTE, NCERT, NIOS, IGNOU, as well as prestigious institutions like IITs, central universities (CUs), and NITs.
The initiative, aligned with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aims to foster multilingualism at all levels of education. By providing study material in Indian languages, students will have the opportunity to learn in their mother tongue, thereby enhancing their comprehension and learning outcomes.
The NEP 2020 underscores the significance of India’s multilingual heritage as a valuable asset for socio-cultural, economic, and educational development. Leveraging this diversity by creating content in local languages will not only enrich the educational experience but also contribute to the nation’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
Within the school education ecosystem, efforts are already underway to provide study material in multiple Indian languages. Platforms like DIKSHA offer study material in over 30 languages, facilitating access to educational resources for students across the country. Furthermore, competitive exams such as JEE, NEET, and CUET are now conducted in 13 Indian languages, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all students.
Moving forward, government institutions, including UGC, AICTE, and the Department of School Education, will collaborate to extend this initiative to state schools and universities. By embracing digital technologies and linguistic diversity, India’s education system is poised to empower students with knowledge and skills while celebrating the rich tapestry of languages that define the nation’s cultural identity.
